God Protects Dogs and Fools…
OK, we know what category I fall into at the moment. Cali spent the entire day at the vet and I picked her up at 6:30 p.m. – just after they had administered the last dose of ToxiBan. She tried to bite through the IV and had to wear an E-collar for most of the day. She was monitored all day, and didn’t show any irregularities in heart rate/rhythm or have any seizures. The vet assistant laughed when I picked her up because she was quite “perky.” She’s always been like that – the vet recorded “Happy Camper” on her chart because she recovered so quickly after she was spayed.
She’s a little angry with me because I keep taking away her water dish after a couple of drinks. The vet said she “thinks” she’s thirsty because of the Toxiban and would gorge and then vomit. She vomited anyway – twice. (I called and asked the vet why she was drinking so much water and by the time I found out she had polished off a whole bowl. I gave her some ice cubes, but she’s not buying that…
Chocolate contains the alkaloid theobromine. Theobromine is similar to caffeine and is used medicinally as a diuretic, heart stimulant, blood vessel dilator, and a smooth muscle relaxant. Darker chocolate contains more theobromine, therefore it’s more toxic to dogs.
The vet was great (it was the owner) and Cali received excellent care. She’s resting quietly, but didn’t want to eat the bland rice with a little turkey gravy that I prepared for her. I’m sure her tummy is in turmoil after the events of the day.
Thanks to everyone (especially Lisa) for their prayers and thoughts.

That’s good news. Scary how quickly something like that can happen!
So its true that chocolates is not good with dogs. Thank God for the wonderful vet who tended to your Cali. You know, my MIL’s mixed-breed dog looks like Cali. I will post his photo one of these days and I will link you,
Take care!
First of all, you are not a fool! We all do things like that, we all make mistakes and we are all human. It’s okay.
I’m so, so glad that Cali is okay now. It is so hard to see our “kids” in pain. It breaks my heart. Now Cali is back safe and sound with you at home– where she belongs.
I’m so glad your baby is ok! Please don’t beat yourself up too much, accidents happen, and everything turned out ok!
BTW, I love that picture below of you guys
