The Language of Flowers

Flowers are one of my favorite subjects to photograph. I find the colors and textures inviting, and love the way that a moment of beauty can be captured.
The Victorians used flowers as a secret method of communication in their era. Floriography was a way in which desires and feelings could be communicated in a non verbal method through flowers and floral arrangements. While the ancient language of flowers is now a seemingly lost art, there are still well known meanings for certain flowers.
- Red Roses – passionate and/or romantic love
- White Rose – chastity and virtue
- Yellow Rose – devotion and friendship
- Daisy- innocence or purity
- Sunflower – adoration/respect (my personal favorite)
- Iris – inspiration
- Pansy – thinking of someone
- Ivy- fidelity
- Orchid – delicate beauty
- Geranium – comfort
- Zinnia – thoughts of friends
- Lilac – first love
- Peony – healing
So, what is your favorite flower and “secret language?”

hydrangea – I think of you the way I would think of my grandma
boar’s breeches – You’re stiff and prickly
impatien – You whore. You just keep blooming all summer long, don’t you?
Wait. Did I take this wrong?
I love this post, and I love assigning flowers to meanings like this. Especially when you combine the flowers to make like a potion. Almost witchy!
I knew some of this about roses, but not about the other flowers. Fun stuff. I love daisies, but not sure about the innocence and purity part.
I love lilacs. They remind me of childhood. We had a line of line running the entire property line of my front yard. I’d sleep with the windows open and the scent would waft in. Happy times!
I’m laughing at Lelo’s comment.
I love orchids….but don’t know that I could ever grow them. I often joke with the kids to just call me Orchid since I am a delicate flower. They just laugh and say, “you aren’t a flower, you are mom!” I tend to think I am delicate! LOL
I’ve always loved Iris blooms. I think inspiration works quite well for me. I seem to be always needing some and coming up with more than I actually need.
Your photo so reminds me of a Georgia O’Keefe print. Quite lovely.
I love sunflowers! The colors are so lively and vibrant
