Best Friends Animal Sanctuary – Kanab, UT
On my “long way home,” I had the good fortune to meet up with full-time RV-ers Annie and Roxanne of “The Good Luck Duck.“ They were gracious enough to give me the secret coordinates to their incredibly beautiful boondocking site so how could I refuse? (Please note that this is what I REALLY look like, as opposed to the freaked out photo they placed on THEIR blog.)
Seriously, Annie and Roxanne are two of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet and I had a wonderful time. They introduced me to the “Duck,” which was tricked out with an amazing solar system and even allowed me to peek at their composting toilet. Composting toilet = No Blackwater Dumping – ever!
We toured the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary (2nd time for the Ducks) and had lunch at the amazing vegetarian restaurant on the grounds. The food was delicious, the company delightful, and the view was beyond words. All of this savory goodness for the mere pittance of $5.00/person. It was amazing to hear the “chatter” going on around at the surrounding tables by the “volunteers.” “I was with the pigs this morning, but I’m going to the bunny house this afternoon.” The “vibe” for the love of animals was certainly in the air…
To say that I was “moved” by the experience is an understatement. I definitely plan to go back for a week to volunteer in the future.
As for the Ducks, they introduced me to their vegan lifestyle and in return I corrupted them by making “Corona-ritas” for happy hour. We talked animals, food, books, movies, and life in general. In short, it was a high point of my summer.
Below this post is a Flickr slideshow of my experience. Enjoy!

It was such fun hanging out with you. Let’s do it again sometime!
Yep, it was big fun! Thanks!
AWESOME photos! We had a great time; we’re so glad you could head this way and spend a couple of days with us! Don’t ever worry about “overstaying.” We were sad to see you go so soon.
You’re so right about Best Friends. There absolutely is a vibe there. The place brings out the best in people. Of course, most people there are already animal-lovers, so that pre-selects a good class of visitors.

The Good Luck Duck´s last [type] ..Exclusive interview with ducks
Thanks for the comment about my photos – I’m an amateur photographer and a pretty good “post processor.”
Hope our paths cross again. Stay safe and be well…
Sounds freaking awesome and heck I’d pay $25 to visit such a place. Where do I sign up?!

The cool part is you can visit and take the great tour for free! Walk to see horses and piggies, too. There’s no charge to take other specific tours, either, or attend demos.
Once you do that, though, you’ll probably want to give them your $25 anyway.

Now if I had stayed out on the road longer I would have tried to contact you. My singles RV group called the WIN’s (Wandering Individuals Network) are visiting the Grand Canyon in October.
Gee, I think I’d love a gig as a ranger – maybe in my next incarnation.
So glad you had a wonderful time… It will be awesome to meet up with virtual friends… and in such a wonderful place. You can’t beat that!
Yep, Annie and Roxanne were great. It’s nice to have a cyber network of new friends.
I love your blog. I did my intership as a groomer there at Best Friends many years ago. I’m so happy to see your pictures. I miss that place, the people, and the animals. I especially liked the feral cat area. Thank you for sharing.
Best Friends is indeed a special place. I want to go back there and volunteer for an extended period. Now that I’m retired I can do it!
OMG, I just saw the picture of the fake cop they have there in the town that I went to grooming school. It is 10mph in that town, and they had this fake cop in a car. One Saturday night after a heavy night of partying, some kids (I assume) decorated that car with beer cans, and kegs etc. It was hilarious! Thanks for bringing back that memory!
I think the “fake cop” does make some folks who speed slow down. However, once you know he’s a “real stiff,” the jig is up!
Could you come over and groom my dog? Her last grooming was in June and she’s “quite the shaggy girl.”
I want to know what is in a Corona-ita. Corona is vegan. Was the -ita part not?
Oh, you tree hugging vegans!
Just kidding of course, I respect your discipline to eat healthier. In El Paso, TX near where I live you can go to a bar and order a margarita with a beer turned upside down in the glass. It actually has the taste of a margarita, but not super sweet. A “Corona-ita” “my way”:
1/2 Corona Lite
1/2 Jose Cuervo Light Margarita (95 Calories) in Classic Lime (Jose Cuervo Especial Tequila, Triple Sec Liqueur, Natural Flavors, Sucralose, and Artificial Colors)
OK, the sucralose is not the best for you, but hopefully you’re not slurping down ten a day.
You could use the “regular” mix with sugar if you so desired, but alcohol has enough calories on it’s own to try to cut corners. You could also “make your own margarita” and then follow the 1/2 and 1/2 rule. It’s a surprisingly refreshing drink…
