It’s Summertime!

Today marks the summer solstice and the first day of summer…

Cox Kids

As a child, I always loved summer.  School was out, the Cox kids went to swimming lessons and open swimming each afternoon, and my mom was the “queen of cakes” for summer birthdays.   What’s not to like?

Life was so much more slower paced and innocent in those days…

For me, the first day of summer is much like Christmas.  There’s an anticipation of excitement leading up to the event, but much too soon it’s all over.  😯

Knowing that summer is fleeting, makes it bittersweet…

The expression “Make Hay While the Sun Shines” is especially true during the summer months.  😎  So, in celebration of the first day of summer, here are some of my favorite photo-graphical moments from the past…

Happy Summer to you too! I sure love the “good ole summertime”! As a teacher, it was a welcome relief from work! As a child it was just plain good fun and yes, there was an innocence back in this days that our kids of today don’t experience…barefoot, swings, walks to the pool with friends, and lemon sours at the drugstore counter!

I’ve never had a lemon sour, but as a “really special treat” my mom and dad would let us pick out a soda (when they STILL came in bottles) from local grocery.

      I didn’t know you were a teacher – me too! Retired 07/12! 🙂

Longest day of the year, that is for sure. Nice to remember the good ole days when kids could be kids…have been thinking about those times myself now that we are visiting family ourselves….especially since mom and dad are both in their “final days” We are very concerned about dad (87), I have never seen him so frail as now. We will be here helping them out for awhile, that is for sure…giving my sisters a break, but we will still get out and see some more of Northern Cal now and then. (so much to see)

And GREAT pictures. Clicked and it took me to your flickr page….even found the “cali” folder. She is definitely taller than Skruffy, but there are so many similarities it is amazing. Hope you get out again soon. You really take great pictures.

It’s good that you’re spending time with your mom and dad – those will be precious memories someday for sure.

Thanks for the kind comments about my photos – I’m kind of an “amateur photographer.” 😉 Loved that you found my Cali girl folder – I love her so much!

My shocks were delivered today (Bilstein) and I’ll have them put on Monday – then I’m “good to go!” 🙂

Yahoooo! Its summer! I expect the summer weather will be following soon. Make the most of every second I know I intend to!!

  6. Hi Cheryl:
I love the circa ’61 pic. I actually had a table and chairs like the one in the photo when my kids were little – further into the 60s. I remember that, even when it was summertime for my own kids, I still got very excited looking forward to that magical time of the year.
When I was little, let’s see: no bath every single night, late curfew for coming in from play, sleepovers, maybe even more than once or twice during summer vacation, lots and lots of swimming, fresh apricots off the trees right outside the house……. Happy Summer to you and all your readers.

Love that family photo! I remember sitting with my Mom on the front step watching lightning storms.

Thanks for reminding me it is summer, All we have is RAIN!

  8. My childhood summer memories were similar. Grew up in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, so lots of swimming! Later on when I was old enough, I got to do some boating, too. We never had a fancy ski boat or anything…always slow rowing or paddling. I still love that type of boating the best.

We lived about a mile from a lake in Minneapolis, and there was a bandshell that had concerts almost every night all summer long. I have great memories of listening to some big names that weren’t yet big…Leon Redbone, John Denver, Garrison Keillor…while eating an ice cream cone. Then biking back home in the dark.
