Friday evening was the opening of my very first photo show at the Percolator Coffee Shop in El Paso, Texas. It was crazy, fun, and stressful all wrapped up into one package. I actually created a slideshow to run concurrently during the opening, there were light refreshments, and a husband of one of the photographers spun some funk and soul.
Afterwards, we had a late dinner at the State Line Restaurant. They serve up some really good barbecue, and I had a combination plate of brisket and smoked turkey. However, many of my “compadres” opted for sausage. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many links of sausage in one place. Something is just “wrong” about that…
A fun time was had by all – now if we just sell some photographs!

Today, while on Flickr looking for a photo “meet-up” group in El Paso, I stumbled upon a project called Capture El Paso…
How many books have you written? If you’re a contributing or voting member of this project, you can add this book to your resumeĀ“. Sure, we may be the ones laying out, proofing, printing, and binding the book, but you’re the source of much of the content, the initial editors (by your vote), and the most valuable part of this project. When we begin production, we will take a look at all of the photos you picked and put them aside to be included in the book. Then we’ll hand all the photos over to our editors who will pick their favorites. Once it’s all said and done, the book will be a good representation of photos you like, photos our editors like, and photos that define the best of the Greater El Paso area.
The “Greater El Paso area” is defined as fifty miles from the city. I’ve only taken a few photos in El Paso proper, but lots in my little town of Las Cruces – about thirty-five miles away. There are lots of prizes to be won, but I’d be thrilled to be “published.” So, if you have some free time on your hands, please click on the screenshot to be taken to the site to “vote” on my photos. (There’s also a link in the sidebar.) Thanks!

These shoes hanging over Hawthorne Street in Portland, Oregon by their laces, (or strings) are a perfect example of shoe tossing (or shoe flinging).
Shoe tossing (or shoe flinging), the act of using shoes as improvised projectiles or weapons, is a constituent of a number of folk sports and practices. Today, it is commonly the act of throwing a pair of shoes onto telephone wires, powerlines, or other raised wires. A related practice is shoe tossing onto trees or fences. Shoe tossing has been observed in areas of the United States, Canada, Britain, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Mexico, Ecuador and Ireland.

Ed Kohler has been cataloging and researching shoe tossing since 2005 on his blog “Shoefiti.”

A little “photo magic” helped to create something that I think is beautiful.

This just happens to be my favorite photo that I’ve ever taken. It’s also my most popular Flickr photo with 164 comments and 251 “faves.” Yes, I did some “color editing.”
